MIDDLESBROUGH: Special school at Nature s World approved

A SPECIAL school on land at a former Teesside attraction has been unanimously approved. The Discovery Special Academy will educate 84 pupils at the former Nature’s World site, off Sandy Flatts Lane, Middlesbrough, after councillors gave the bid the thumbs up on Friday.  Council leaders agreed the sale of 4.5 acres of land near the former attraction in 2019 – with a school for youngsters aged four to 11 with complex and significant communication, physical and educational needs set to come to the site.  Proposals for the academy were first unveiled in 2017 and all planning committee members were behind the school plan. Huge rise in rat problems blamed on people feeding birds

A RISE in rodents has prompted calls for Teessiders to stop feeding birds after high demand for pest control teams. The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) saw a 51 per cent rise in rodent activity during the first lockdown earlier this year. And officers told the latest Middlesbrough environment scrutiny panel how pest control companies had seen a 78 per cent increase in calls for help in the second lockdown October and November. In the wake of the figures, Coulby Newham councillor David Branson believed the council had to take the “difficult decision” to tell people not to feed birds. He added: “I’ve a feeling more birds will survive now while we’ve got milder winters.
