Assam Election Results: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears set to retain power in Assam as poll trends show the saffron party taking a decisive lead against rivals Congress, Badruddin Ajmal s AIUDF and others. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal thanked the people of state for keeping faith in the party. The ruling BJP-led NDA is surging ahead of the Grand Alliance spearheaded by the Congress in Assam, leading in 77 of the 119 seats, latest trends available on the Election Commission website said. People have blessed us. We can say for sure that the BJP will form government in Assam. We are coming back to power with our partners AGP and UPPL, Sonowal said. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contested 92 seats and its alliance partner Asom Gana Parishad on 26 seats. On the other hand, the Congress contested 94 seats, whereas Badruddin Ajmal s AIUDF fielded candidates on 14 seats.
DAUTING TASK: Congress’s Romen Chandra Borthakur
GUWAHATI: Romen Chandra Borthakur isn’t a new name in the political circles in Assam. He started as the Dibrugarh district general secretary of All Assam Students’ Union, and later served as a leader of Asom Gana Parishad until 2001.
But this time, he is in focus because he is the Congress candidate against BJP’s most high-profile candidate literally its face in the northeast Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Sarma, who has won from Jalukbari four times, is eyeing a fifth consecutive win. The BJP heavyweight has conducted a high-voltage campaign across the state this time, leaving his wife to fill in for him in his home turf.

GUWAHATI: A booklet titled Hepahor Jalukbari Kisu Porikolpona of Congress candidate from Jalukbari constituency, Romen Chandra Borthakur was released here on Wednesday. The booklet was released by Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Bhuyan, former MP Balin Kuli, and AICC spokesperson Rituparna Konwar.
Addressing the media here, Borthakur slammed the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) for failing to complete the construction of water supply projects that were started during the Congress regime.
