6 Little-Known Jewish Languages
Jewish communities around the world created their own language.
When the ancient Israelites were slaves in Egypt, they assimilated into Egyptian society – with three key exceptions. They never lost their distinctive Jewish mode of dress, they maintained their Jewish names, and they kept their Jewish language. These three features enabled them to just barely hold on to their Jewish identity.
Scattered far and wide, Jewish communities have carved out distinctive languages, keeping them somewhat apart from the larger non-Jewish communities surrounding them. Dr. Mary Connertey, Teaching Professor Emeritus at Penn State Behrend, explained to Aish.com that “Anywhere we (Jews) have lived we created our own language.”
For us in Australia it’s a pity that International Holocaust Remembrance Day falls on 27 January. Just after Australia Day – a challenging marker for our First Nation’s people. Most Australians enjoy a welcome break from work and politics, especially this year given the enormous challenge of 2020 due to the global pandemic.
The day, 27 January, marks the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp, where more than a million people were murdered by the Nazis. Not something to be ignored.
For many Australian families the Holocaust is a shared memory of horror and grief. That is as true for the Greek-Australian community as it is for other Australians. Nearly 60,000 Greek Jews died at Auschwitz, and many more in other places. Some of their descendants and relatives are living here in Australia with us today.

He samples the gamut, from the ubiquitous red jelly-filled to the decadent halva or dulce de leche-flavored, at gas stations or at high end patisseries.
“I never eat an entire donut” he wrote via e-mail. By the time Hanukkah actually starts, he’s done with doughnuts and has latched on to latkes.
Of course, each oily food in Kent’s annual routine is a traditional Chanuka treat among Jewish communities around the world. The oil used to fry each dish recalls the miracle of the oil lasting in the rededicated Jerusalem Temple in the second century BCE.
