RYPTO BUFFS have had a punishing week. On May 13th Tether, which issues a “stablecoin” widely used to facilitate bitcoin trading, said that just 2.9% of its $58bn-worth of coins is backed by cash reserves, feeding doubts about its dollar peg. Elon Musk, Tesla’s boss, tweeted that the electric-car maker would not after all accept payments in bitcoin. Then on May 18th China warned financial firms against servicing cryptocurrencies. The price of bitcoin tumbled to $30,000, less than half its record high in April, before stabilising at around $39,000.
As it cratered, bitcoin dragged most other cryptocurrencies with it. Several big crypto exchanges, including Coinbase, experienced lengthy outages. Investors unable to liquidate positions felt trapped; those willing to “buy the dip” felt cheated. Charles Schwab Itching to Invest Trillions Into Cryptocurrency, Waiting For SEC Clarity
In 18 months, investment firm Charles Schwab has 180’ed on the idea of offering cryptocurrency to its clients. Previously, the firm warned that cryptocurrencies were a purely speculative instrument. But now, based on client demand, it’s ready to make a move.
“If the company decides to participate in the crypto market we will be highly competitive, we will be disruptive, and we will be client oriented.”
There’s just one issue, the lack of regulatory clarity from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Aside from several high-profile lawsuits involving allegations of selling unregistered securities, there’s also the lack of a legal definition to contend with. With newly appointed Chair Gary Gensler at the helm, can we now expect the SEC to get its act together?
