Para rower Benjamin defies the odds to win European silver

AMMANFORD para rower Benjamin Pritchard has defied the odds to win a silver medal at the European Championships – despite having to recover from injury and catching coronavirus. Pritchard was diagnosed with Covid-19 just before Christmas, and although he only suffered mild symptoms, it impacted on his recovery time, having undergone arm surgery a month earlier. The 29-year-old, however, has battled back to fitness to finish second in the PR1 men s single sculls in Varese, Italy, behind defending Paralympic, World and European Champion Roman Polianskyi. “The decision for me to fly was only made on the Monday afternoon, it was touch and go and we didn t know if I was competing,” revealed Pritchard, who is a former cyclist and triathlete.

Glover s golden run resumes at European Rowing Championships in Varese

Glover s golden run resumes at European Rowing Championships in Varese Sunday, 11 April 2021 Britain’s double Olympic champion Helen Glover extended her exceptional winning record today as she and Polly Swann became European women’s pair champions in Varese in Italy. The 34-year-old, who partnered Heather Stanning to Olympic gold at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games, returned to competition this year having taken four years out, during which time she and her husband, TV naturalist Steve Backshall, have had three children including twins last year. In what was only her second post-comeback race with Swann following Friday’s (April 9) win in the heats, Glover provided her habitual power and technique in a boat that came home in 7min 02.73sec, with Romania taking silver in 7:03.02 and Spain bronze in 7:03.75.
