CALERA, Ala. (WBRC) - Five Calera Police officers jumped in a near-freezing lake Sunday night to save a man considered a suspect.
Calera Police Chief David Hyche said it started around 11:30 p.m. as a suspicious person near a business.
Chief Hyche said Sgt. Jay Cardwell spotted two people near the Chick-Fil-A. The restaurant was closed when Cardwell drove into the parking lot and one of the two people took off running.

What started out as a suspicious person near a Calera business ended up with a suspect and five police officers in near-freezing water late Sunday night.
In the end, all were OK but Calera Police Chief David Hyche said it could have had a much different ending. “We narrowly avoided a great tragedy last night,’ he said.
It all began about 11:30 p.m. when Sgt. Jay Cardwell spotted two people near the closed Chick-Fil-A entrance in Calera. Cardwell drove into the parking lot and one of the two people took off running.
