Steals by Cubs first basemen and pitchers By JohnW53 on May 6, 2021, 7:20am CDT +
A previous post documented the 10 steals of home by Cubs catchers since 1920.
That post also noted that the Cubs have had exactly 500 steals of any base by their catchers during the entire Modern Era, which began in 1901.
That got me thinking about 2 other positions not usually associated with stolen bases: first base and pitcher.
....
MISSING SPLITS
Finding the number of steals at a specific fielding position for players during the Dead Ball Era proved challenging
Baseball-reference.com does not have career splits by position for many of those, and incomplete splits for others.
Cubs leadoff hitters through the years By JohnW53 on Feb 7, 2021, 4:51am CST +
It s possible to win a title without having a high-average leadoff man.
The Cubs proved it in 2020, winning the Central Division despite ranking last of all 30 Major League teams in batting average for players who started games at the top of the batting order.
The Cubs
.211 average was 4 points behind that of the second-worst Reds, 6 behind the No. 28 Brewers and 10 behind the co-No. 26 Pirates and Rangers.
All 25 other teams had an average of at least .230 by their leadoff man.
The Marlins ranked 21st, at .245. All 10 remaining National League teams had an average of at least .264 53 points higher than the Cubs!
145-year chain of Cubs middle infielders By JohnW53 on Dec 22, 2020, 6:23am CST +
If you did, and thought it was silly, you likely will find this just as silly.
If you did, and thought it was fascinating, you may find this equally fascinating:
It is possible to make a similar chain of 61 alternating shortstops and second baseman that span all 145 seasons of the Cubs National League history.
.
As with the pitchers and catchers, this chain of double play partners consists not just of a shortstop and second baseman who were ON the team in the same season.
It consists of a shortstop and second baseman who were on the field TOGETHER in the LAST game either the shortstop or second baseman played for the Cubs, under their team s various names, through all 145 seasons!
