Auckland Theatre Company’s (ATC) production of
The Haka Party Incident, described as an “innovative, brilliant piece of theatre that all New Zealanders need to see” will tour to venues and festivals across the motu in October and November. Winner of Playmarket’s Best Play by a Māori Playwright and the inaugural Dean Parker Adaptation for Non-Fiction Award earlier this year, judges said the play was “powerful political theatre which rips the Band Aid off racism in Aotearoa.”

At 111-years-old it s not often you get gifted another name to use, but that’s what happen to the Ww 480 steam engine being named Tāiki by the local iwi of Waiuku to celebrate at Matariki time. Ngāti Te Ata and the Glenbrook Vintage Railway have teamed up to celebrate Te Mātahi o Te Tau (the Māori New Year) differently with Waiuku iwi ancestral names to remember the history of the area.

The Ngarimu VC and the 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships are a Gardiner-Parata family affair this year, with Rakaitemania Parata-Gardiner being one of the six scholarship recipients and her father Sir Wira Harawira Gardiner being given the Manakura Award for leadership.
It’s the first time the Manakura Award has been presented since 2018 and comes with a cheque for $30,000.
Ms Gardiner-Parata is studying law at the University of Waikato.
Undergraduate scholarships also went to Isaac Smiler, who is studying medicine and surgery at the University of Otago, and Kirihautu Durie-Ngata who is studying towards a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Accounting and Māori and Indigenous Studies at the University of Waikato.
