The article explores the traditional methods of oil extraction in Kashmir before modern mechanised techniques were introduced. The process was carried out at Tile’Woin Wan, a place where oil pressing was done, and families associated with this profession were known as Telis. The Telis were not exclusive to Kashmir but were prevalent throughout the Indian subcontinent. The extracted oil served various culinary purposes and was also used for lighting lamps in the absence of electricity and kerosene. Telis in Kashmir were identified by the surname Wa’in, and their profession was integral to the region's identity.
