Commentary: An immediate solution to 50% emissions reduction stands all around us
Modern wood heat lowers emissions, keeps money local, creates jobs and supports forest stewardship.

In the Northeast, where snow regularly falls into late April, heating our homes and buildings accounts for 40.3 million tons a year of carbon dioxide emissions from more than 3.6 billion gallons of heating oil – not to mention the other fossil fuels used for heat.

One of the useful functions of the latter book, in particular, is that it brings force and clarity to one’s prior knowledge of the dangers of right-wing libertarianism, or more generally anti-government and pro-“free market” thinking. In fact, this sort of thinking is an utter catastrophe that threatens to destroy everything beautiful in the world. I know that sounds like an absurd exaggeration, but it’s not. What with society and nature teetering on the brink, it’s the literal truth. I suppose the reason leftists don’t always take right-wing libertarianism as seriously as it deserves despite their deep awareness of the evils of capitalism is simply that it’s embarrassingly easy to refute. It’s a childish, simplistic, vulgar hyper-capitalist ideology that, once you examine it a little, quickly reveals itself as its opposite: authoritarianism. Or even totalitarianism, albeit privatized totalitarianism. Noam Chomsky, as usual, makes the point eloquently:

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument has received $380,000 to potentially acquire two tracts of private land whose owners had signaled a willingness to sell to the federal government before the monument’s creation four years ago.
The U.S. Department of the Interior recently announced that Katahdin Woods and Waters – a roughly 87,500-acre national monument located just east of Baxter State Park – received the money to acquire unnamed tracts that “will provide enhanced recreational opportunities for visitors to enjoy.”
