Boom Radio goes live for baby boomers on DAB Phil Riley and David Lloyd’s radio station, Boom Radio, has officially launched with breakfast host Graham Dene welcoming listeners at 10am. The first song? All you need is Love by The Beatles. The service is aiming to attract half a million listeners using digital-only transmission, starting off with DAB multiplexes in London, Glasgow, Birmingham, Bristol and Portsmouth. Former Capital breakfast presenter Graham Dene is joined on the line-up by former colleagues Nicky Horne – and the person who hosted Capital’s first ever programme in 1973 – David Symonds. Also on the roster announced in January are David Hamilton, Jane Markham and Les Ross. 70s Magpie TV host Jenny Hanley hosts a weekend show alongside Kid Jensen, and Anna Raeburn.

Targeted at the country’s 14 million ‘Baby Boomers’ (approximately those born between 1945 and 1963), the station aims to serve a generation who have been abandoned both by mainstream commercial stations and by BBC Radio 2 which is now trying to attract ‘Mood Mums’, a term given to women between the ages of 35 and 44 who are time-poor and family oriented.  The new station began its broadcast with a statement read out over the woozy organ of the Beatles’ Strawberry Fields Forever: “You are the original influencer, your generation moved from Instamatic to Instagram, Mac Fisheries to Matalan, Dan Dare to Danny Dyer, into the Common Market and back out again.” It concluded: “You’ve lived through a lot and you’re still busy living.” It seemed to be a gentle reprimand to the stations that have given up on the B

Several well-known radio personalities from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s will be heard, including a weekday breakfast show hosted by Graham Dene who woke up London for a generation, the familiar voice of David Hamilton from midday, Nicky Horne early evening and Diana Luke late at night.

Delux Radio expands with online oldies channel Online service Delux Radio is starting a new oldies channel under the new ownership of Radiowaves Media Ltd. Delux Gold will launch on 16th January with presenters including Roger Day, Rob Charles, Steve Penk, Mark Page, Geoff Dorsett, Sue Merchant, Charmaine Davis and David Wimble. New owner Radiowaves Media was set up seven years ago to supply radio channels on board cruise ships. Station founder David Wimble told RadioToday: “Like most people, we have had our ups and downs over the past 12 months, Covid hit us hard and we had to repatriate 33 of the team that we had on board ships, which in itself was a huge expense, as many were on world cruises at the time.”
