Four years after launch, U-M Biosciences Initiative reviews progress and looks to the future

Contact: ericksn@umich.edu Since its launch in 2017, University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel’s Biosciences Initiative has established nine major research initiatives on campus and has taken other significant steps designed to propel U-M to the forefront of the life sciences. Key elements of the multiyear strategy include the hiring of 30 tenure-track faculty and a one-time investment of $150 million. To date, $133 million and all 30 tenure lines have been allocated. The ongoing efforts which were interrupted by the pandemic and the associated U-M hiring and spending freezes are detailed in a new progress report (PDF) from the Biosciences Initiative. “All of the elements are in place for U-M to fully achieve our potential during this era of unprecedented opportunities for discovery,” Schlissel states in the report’s introductory Message from the President. “We are emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic well-positioned to drive rapid a

Is this protein a target for eating disorder drugs?

As reported in Science Translational Medicine, researchers pinpointed a protein called melanocortin 3 receptor (or MC3R) as an avenue for accessing the brain circuitry that controls the body’s energy balance and food intake. The research offers preliminary evidence that manipulating the MC3R can either stimulate or suppress food intake. The MC3R sits on the surface of neurons, where it sends and receives signals about the overall energy balance in the body. Although this protein is found throughout the brain, it is particularly prevalent in brain regions that are known to control feeding in both mice and humans.

Courage Therapeutics Awarded STTR Grant to Design Novel Anorexia Drugs

Share: Courage Therapeutics has been awarded an STTR grant by the National Insittute of Mental Health to design novel anorexia drugs. The grant is a follow-up to research by the Cone lab at the University of Michigan that recently published in Science Translational Research that MC3R is a potential target for therapeutic development in anorexia and obesity. The effort allows for an expeditious translation of basic science into eating disorders which have remained an area of significant unmet need. Newton, MA, April 23, 2021 (PR.com) Courage Therapeutics has been awarded a grant to design novel drug compounds to treat anorexia nervosa from the National Institute of Mental Health.
