Mayor Doug Essek was not part of the trustee gathering on Monday.
Monday evening’s special meeting, which was televised only through the Fredonia Public Access Channel, said it all. When it came to the final approval of the 2021-22 village of Fredonia budget, Mayor Douglas Essek was on the outside looking in.
Seated in village hall were the five trustees while Essek joined the meeting by video. Residents, who wanted details, were nearly facing some of the same obstacles.
As of Tuesday morning, there was no agenda published on the village’s website for the previous evening’s meeting and no details regarding the budget.

The village of Fredonia’s water filtration plant is getting ready for some big changes over the next few months.
To begin with, the plant is installing a new actuator at a cost of $4,850 that will be installed by Upstate Valve and Control, also a valve recently went that hadn’t been replaced in over 50 years. “This is a valve that’s part of our system, the old one hadn’t been replaced since 1966, so it’s something that lasts for quite a long time” Trustee Roger Britz stated at the Board of Trustees meeting last week.

Mayor Doug Essek has proposed lifting the $500 food truck fee for the Fredonia festivals for this year. In light of lost revenues by those vendors as well as the establishments in the village due to COVID-19 the Board of Trustees agreed it would be a fitting thing to do.
The discussion began at the Board of Trustees meeting where Trustee James Lynden cited the OBSERVER article about a few of the festivals possibly moving to the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds due to the food truck law.
“If that’s their intention to move so it’s no longer part of Fredonia I would suggest that we don’t hold these dates,” Lynden stated in regard to a resolution blocking festival dates in the village. “Maybe someone wants to start a new festival. if they’re making suggestions that they’re going to take it out of the village I can’t see that we hold the date. Do we hold these dates?”

If at first you do not succeed, try again. The village of Fredonia’s Board of Trustees voted 3-1 to appoint Heidi Powell to former Trustee Kara Christina’s vacant seat.
An hour into the meeting Trustee James Lynden put forth a discussion on an interested party for the seat, John Siskar.
“He expressed his interest and forwarded all of his credentials, which I forwarded to all of the trustees, the mayor and the village clerk,” Lynden began. “He has an extensive list of credentials and I asked for feedback on that. No one responded whatsoever to me or him. With his extensive history and experience, I think he would be a very valued member of our board.”
