Brig-Gen Moyo National Hero
Decorated military commander, Brigadier-General Collin Moyo (Retired), who died in Harare last Friday, has been declared a National Hero.
Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri announced the status at Brig-Gen Moyo (Rtd)’s house in Harare yesterday.
“He has been declared a National Hero. We cannot tell you when he will be buried. We know that he did not die as a result of Covid-19. His burial is different from those who were Covid-19 positive.
“We are expected to have controlled numbers at the burial, so the Ministry of Health and Child Care and the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage will give us advice,” she said.
Farewell Brig-General Moyo
My first military training was in Zambia at Mwembeshi Training Camp and we were transferred to Mgagao which was a Zanla training camp.
After the shoot-out at Mgagao, the OAU decided to transfer us to Morogoro where I first met Rodwell Nyika (Brig-General Collin Moyo Retired). He was a Zipra instructor at Morogoro Training Camp. He was one of my trainers in 1976. I think our group was the last group to receive military training at Morogoro.
From there the instructors were taken to Zambia and I was deployed to the war front in Feira where I operated for some time. Rodwell was also later deployed in Feira as the regional commander, replacing David Chibhoyi who is now late. Feira we are referring to places from Kanyemba up to Chirundu and to Mana Pools.
National Hero Moyo’s Burial Set for Today
January 12, 2021
Acting President Kembo Mohadi says youths must emulate the gallantry and dedication exhibited by national hero, Brigadier-General Collin Moyo (Retired), who gave his all for the country’s independence, but sadly passed on last Friday when the country had started a new “war” towards economic development.
He said the decorated military commander was among comrades who played a leading role in the unification of armed forces, ultimately giving birth to the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), which played a critical role in the signing of the Unity Accord on December 22, 1987.
The Unity Accord was between PF ZAPU and ZANU which formed ZanuPF. Brig-Gen Moyo (Rtd), whose Chimurenga name was Rodwell Nyika, will be buried today at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.
National hero Moyo died a bitter man

ZIPRA Veterans Association members, who mourned the late Retired Brigadier General, Collin Moyo, who died last Friday aged 66, said he died bitter over the marginalisation of the ex-Zapu military wing cadres.
Moyo was declared a national hero and was buried at the National Heroes Acre yesterday.
Zipra Veterans Association spokesperson Buster Magwizi yesterday told Southern Eye that Moyo, the most decorated military commander, trained people like Vice-President Kembo Mohadi, but died in poverty.
“He worked in the Ministry of Defence and War Veterans Welfare, but was being despised as he only got promotion after a long time when most of his juniors had been promoted ahead of him,’’ said Magwizi, adding that his wish was to see everyone being put on the same economic footing.
