Chile health regulator approves AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine

Ramos Miranda SANTIAGO, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Chile s health regulator on Wednesday approved the AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use among its population by a unanimous vote of its advisory board. The approval from the Chilean Public Health Institute (ISP) is for the use of 6.6 million doses as part of a two-dose regime for Chileans over the age of 18 and without an upper age limit. Chilean trade vice-minister Rodrigo Yanez, in charge of vaccine supply agreements, said four million doses that had been purchased direct from the company would start to arrive at the end of March and be administered until June.

The UK-based company has been conducting late-stage trials of its vaccine, developed with Oxford University, in Chile as well as in Brazil, the UK, the United States and South Africa. Chile has signed a deal to buy 14.4 million doses of the drug, an amount that would vaccinate half that number of people, or nearly 40% of the country s population.
