According to court documents: Geiser s son, Darrick Geiser, called the police after his father threatened to hurt himself. An Apple Creek police officer located Rodney Geiser behind the former Harvest Market, 60 E Main St. Geiser continuously held a gun pointed at his own head. He did not point the gun at the officers or any civilians. Geiser continued to hold the gun to his head as he walked around the village. Officers ordered Geiser to stop. He passed numerous residences, a car wash, the Dollar Store and the post office. Geiser  paid no attention to and did not threaten any of these people.

He yelled at deputies on a Sunday morning as he walked with the gun through the streets of Apple Creek, a rural village about 90 minutes south of Cleveland. Officers tracked his movements and followed him, demanding that he put the weapon down and stop. He had used methamphetamine and seemed irrational, telling authorities that either he would shoot himself or they would, records show. Geiser, 60, even waved off a friend seeking to help him.
