Rainsville approves wastewater plant upgrades

The Rainsville City Council on Monday night approved improvements to the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. Rainsville Councilman Derek Rosson said the various upgrades, which will include pipes and manholes, are in support of the plant running more efficiently. The council approved the installment of five Manhole Extensions for the Wastewater Treatment Plant. “There’s a lot of manholes that the seals need to be put in and raised up due to all the rain we’ve been receiving the last couple of weeks,” said Rosson. “We are going to go ahead and fix those five for sure, and I think they are roughly about $5,000 to $7,000.”

Rainsville focuses on beautification

The Rainsville City Council is tackling beautification with plans to demolish unsafe buildings. Councilman Rickey Byrum said there are 40-50 such structures throughout the town and it will take some time to clear them. He said it is important to prevent rodents that spread disease from inhabiting old structures belonging to absentee owners and areas overgrown with tress and tall grass. Following the passage of Resolution 02-18-2021(D), certified inspectors will test the unsafe buildings for asbestos and other banned materials so they can be safely burned. “We’ve got to start somewhere,” Byrum said, proposing the resolution that passed unanimously.

Mayor Rodger Lingerfelt said Rainsville Public Works needs money for equipment and to cover rising costs. He said the sanitation rates in Rainsville haven’t changed since 2005. Since then, the rates have been $14.00 per month for residents. Now, rates will increase to $18.00 per month. Mayor Lingerfelt said part of this increase is because costs for the Public Works Department have increased over the years.
