has been publishing touching tributes for the thousands of Canadians who have died of COVID-19.
Your tributes put a face to some of the more than 25,000 Canadians who have died of COVID-19 (“They Were Loved,” Coronavirus, July 2021). My concern is with all the people who didn’t receive proper care because of the pandemic. My brother, diagnosed with dementia, was kept in a Nova Scotia hospital and did not get to a long-term care home until nine months later. My sister, who was suffering from kidney disease, was kept on a stretcher in a hospital in N.L. for six days and eventually succumbed to kidney failure. My disabled brother was misdiagnosed with an eye infection and was nearly blind when my sister got him to a specialist.

The problem with prisons
Kudos to Justin Ling and
Maclean’s for the excellent writing and analysis regarding Canada’s prison system (“Houses of hate,” Analysis, May 2021). Now it is up to the federal and provincial governments to begin a full revamp of these costly and largely ineffective programs. Warehousing those in conflict with the law has long been known to be a poor way to spend money on rehabilitation. New approaches must be found.

Skoda UK has appointed Kevin Rendell as its new head of sales operations.
Rendell joins Skoda following five years as head of aftersales at Volkswagen UK, and has spent almost 30 years with Volkswagen Group working across aftersales, sales, and product, with Seat, Volkswagen, Volkswagen Group Services, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
He replaces John French, who is becoming head of product planning for Seat and Cupra UK.
Rendell said: What a fantastic time to join Skoda. The development of the brand has been extremely impressive and with the recent launches of the Octavia and Enyaq iV, it has a strong and enviable model line-up.
