“Then all of a sudden, they had to wait another year. For some, it was a bridge too far.” It’s been a challenging 18 months for the athletes, with preparation for the Games being disrupted. Even with that disruption, many are “getting on with stuff and performing to the best of their ability”, he said. “There was some anxiety around the Games and [athletes] having to change their schedules. There was an uncontrollable aspect of it which has impacted not just athletes but the general population,” he said “Once the Games were announced. they got on with it. They had a plan and could put campaigns together.

Professor Holly Thorpe from the University of Waikato, says many female athletes involved with the research reported receiving abusive comments and “trolling” on social media. “You’ve got racism and sexism going on … and a lot of really negative body comments as well,” she said. “A lot of athletes aren t calling it out, they re just trying to deal with it . [but] it takes a significant toll.”

Lynette Grace has been named deputy
Chef de Mission for the New Zealand team at this year s Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) named eight individuals appointed to the support team for Tokyo 2020.
The announcement was made to mark six months to go until the Paralympics open in the Japanese capital on August 24.
Grace, who will work with
Chef de Mission Paula Tesoriero, has been PNZ s games campaign and sports manager since 2014 and has attended two previous Paralympic Games in management roles. I am excited to welcome Lynette Grace officially to the team, said Tesoriero.
