ROCKFORD Individuals behind in their rent and utilities because of a COVID-19-related hardship are now eligible to apply for rental assistance.
Earlier this year, Winnebago County Board Chairman Joe Chiarelli announced the county applied for and received an $8.3 million federally funded Emergency Rental Assistance Grant to help tenants and landlords with past-due rent payments.
On Monday, he said the county has partnered with the city of Rockford s Human Services Department to administer the program and shared how tenants and landlords can apply for funding. This is a very important move for our county for people who have been impacted by COVID-19, Chiarelli said.
2021 Community Action Scholarship applications available

ROCKFORD Applications for the 2021 Community Action Scholarship are now available through the city of Rockford Human Services Department.
The average scholarship award is $2,300 with multiple awards available. Applicants must meet household income guidelines, reside in Winnebago or Boone County, and plan on attending a post-secondary accredited school or training program located in the state of Illinois in 2021. There is no age requirement. The financial assistance is paid directly to the institution for direct costs of tuition and textbooks.
With the 2020 Community Needs Assessment showing a gap in educational achievement based on race, diverse students are encouraged to apply. Scholarships are funded by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity through the Community Services Block Grant.
