affordable. now, it s my first time inside a spaceship. in fact, it s the first time that any journalist has been allowed in here. it s obviously not finished at the moment. the pilots will sit here. and there will be six passengers sitting three along each side of the spaceship. they ll be able to look out of these windows and see the blue sky of the earth turning first purple and then into the blackness of space. the roar of the rocket motor behind them will disappear. the rush of the atmosphere along the outside of the spaceship will vanish. when they hear the silence that s left, and see the blackness outside, they ll know they re in space. they ll then get around five minutes floating in this cabin. whilst they re weightless 70 miles above the earth, this is the view they ll see. the astronauts will begin their journey here. the world s first purpose-built commercial space port designed by norman foster and under construction in the new mexico desert. they ll get three days of
training before heading to space. the trip comes in two parts. first this plane carries the spaceship up to 50,000 feet, higher than a normal plane, before dropping it in midair. the spaceship then fires its rocket motor and in less than a minute will be traveling at 2,500 miles an hour. of course, every spaceship needs a pilot. you know, the biggest challenges because we re in a test flight program is not the actual flying of the vehicle. it s anticipating what could go wrong because it s a one-of-a-kind airplane. reporter: virgin claims the trips into space will are lower carbon emissions per passenger than a flight across the atlantic but it s still a lot of energy to use on a very short trip. the past 50 years there s been a little over 400, close to 500 people go to space. i think in the first year or two, the goal of this program is to carry, you know, maybe thousands of people to space. it s just a game-changer, you know.

that shows the amount of tremendous excitement for people to go into space. when is the first flight going to be? we don t give out a date. we want to make sure the test flight program has plenty of time what it needs to make sure we have very safe vehicles. what we can say is we re about to enter the glide test phase of our test flight program. right after that will be the rocket-powered phase where we actually are testing out the rocket motor and then we re going to be going into space with commercial service soon after that. we plan to be going into space next year. what do you get for the $200,000. you only get a few minutes technically in space, but the ride takes a while? well, that s exactly right. the way that we like to think about it is that we re fulfilling people s dreams to go into space. the experience they ll have is several days of train, astronaut training where they re able to go through, you know, the various tests and acclimatizin
