Fireworks, festivities slated for Independence Day weekend

Fireworks will once again brighten the skies the east metro area with several Fourth of July celebrations set to take place over the holiday weekend. After a pandemic hiatus last year, Conyers’ Independence Day celebration — Red, White & Boom! — returns this year on July 3 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The city of Conyers and Rockdale County governments have partnered to bring back Independence Day fireworks to the heart of Olde Town on Saturday, July 3, from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. “After missing out on the July 4 celebration in 2020 due to the pandemic, I am very excited that we’re able to bring this popular event back this year with a fabulous fireworks show. This will be yet another great event that will allow us to feel that things are truly getting back to the way they were,” said Mayor Vince Evans.

Rockdale schools to hold virtual teacher job fair May 19

CONYERS – Rockdale County Public Schools will hold a Virtual RCPS Teacher Job Fair on Wednesday, May 19, 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. online. According to the school system, RCPS is seeking outstanding candidates for teaching positions in the 2021-2022 school year. Most RCPS schools will be represented and interviews will be held during the Virtual Job Fair. To pre-register, please visit www.rockdaleschools.org/jobfair RCPS has 11 elementary schools, four middle schools, three traditional high schools, a virtual campus and four non-traditional schools (Rockdale Career Academy, Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology, Open Campus, Alpha Academy). In addition, the school system offers specialty and choice programs focusing on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), performing and visual arts, technology and engineering, pre-medical science, business and leadership, radio and film entertainment, and much more.

Springfield Baptist Church is at 1877 Iris Drive SE, Conyers, GA 30013.

Some Newton County residents were caught by surprise after state health officials recently moved the Covington site for COVID-19 vaccinations to Conyers. One resident said it was done without enough notice and could pose a risk to eligible patients who must now travel 13 miles west for the vaccine. Gwinnett, Newton & Rockdale County Health Departments on Jan. 18 moved one of its two vaccination sites from Covington to a site 13 miles west at the Rockdale Career Academy in Conyers.
