#SWEETREADS: Check Out a Book of Poetry for National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month, and there are so many ways to celebrate – the most obvious of which is to check out a book of poetry. National Poetry Month was started in April 1996 by the Academy of American Poets to remind the public that poetry matters and the role that it plays in our culture. Poetry is designed to open the door to real life and to emotions, whether those emotions are love, sadness, fear or humor. I, for one, am not a poet. My attempts at writing poetry have been sad at best. That being said, I do appreciate a good poem written by someone else. I very much appreciate humorous poetry, which I first discovered as a child. Specifically, Shel Silverstein.

Woman's Club Returns to Longtime Tradition of Decorating Trees

For decades, the Woman’s Club of Rock Springs has been decorating Christmas trees for both libraries in Rock Springs. In recent years, the tradition of creating and collecting ornaments has gone on hiatus, however, this year the ladies got together and decked out three trees at the Rock Springs Historical Museum. Using decorations from years past, they put together three trees for the community to enjoy while visiting the museum. They used old decorations from previous trees, including handmade angels, constructed out of yarn. Advertisement - Story continues below. One of the yarn angel ornaments. The Rock Springs Historical Museum has scrapbooks that compile the history of the Woman’s Club, including the trees they have decorated over the years. Jennifer Messer, Rock Springs Historical Museum Coordinator, said the earliest Christmas tree she could find that was decorated by the club was in 1960-61.
