In coordination with Arkansas County Sheriff Dean Mannis, the Stuttgart Civil and Human Rights Party (SCHRP) held a cleanup of Stuttgart neighborhoods Thursday and Friday, May 13 and May 14.
Arkansas County Detention Center inmates helped pick up debris in neighborhoods on the east side of Stuttgart last Thursday and Friday.
Inmates from the Arkansas County Detention Center, alongside SCHRP founder Robert Chambers, picked up trash in neighborhoods on the east side of Stuttgart commonly known to residents as Rock Island, New Edition, and Cross the Track.

The City of Rock Island might well have become the chair capitol of the world, had it not been for an actress named Lilian Lewis.
A Swiss Canadian, C. C. Knell, moved to Rock Island in 1876 and opened a furniture store on the ground floor of the new three-story Harper s Opera House on second avenue and sixteenth street.
In 1883, Knell changed the world of chairs forever. At that time, America was a land of uncomfortable, straight backed, hard-seated kitchen and dining room chairs. Women had the rocking chair invented by Benjamin Franklin for their babies and their knitting, but a man coming home from twelve hours of hard work could hardly relax in his home s Puritan chairs.

Of at least one Rock Islander, Benjamin Dann Walsh, it can truly be said that there was some good news and some bad news. The good news was that early on the morning of November 12, 1869, as he was collecting bugs along the Chicago and Rock Island railroad tracks near 34th Street in Rock Island, a Chicago bound train ran over his left leg.
Walsh had emigrated from England to Chicago, and then, in 1850, to Rock Island. He became a successful lumberman and real estate developer, but his real passion was entomology the study of bugs. He collected them, studied them, and wrote about them.
