The building that houses The Eagle, a South of Market leather-themed LGBTQ bar, is still for sale, according to one of the real estate agents. Brian Leung of Compass Commercial, one of the Realtors listed on a For Sale sign at 398 12th Street, told the Bay Area Reporter as much last week when he said the property has not been sold. There were articles that said it d changed hands, Leung said, referring to several B.A.R. articles that inaccurately stated the building was sold last year. (Those online versions have been corrected.) Leung told the B.A.R. that he can t reveal the asking price for the property because of confidentiality agreements.

The supervisors unanimously voted 11-0 Tuesday to back District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney s resolution initiating the process to designate the Eagle as a city landmark. It would be the third gay bar location in San Francisco given such status if approved, and the first LGBTQ city landmark located in SOMA and related to queer leather culture. The city s historic preservation commission now has 90 days to take up the matter. Following its decision, the supervisors would need to vote on officially designating the bar at 398 12th Street a local landmark.

The members of a San Francisco supervisors panel are recommending that their colleagues start the process to landmark a gay-owned bar in the city s South of Market district. At its meeting January 25 the supervisors land use and transportation committee unanimously voted 3-0 in support of having the city s historic preservation commission consider if the Eagle Bar, an important entertainment venue located in the Leather and LGBTQ Cultural District, should be designated a city landmark. It would be the third gay bar location in San Francisco given such status if approved, and the first LGBTQ city landmark located in SOMA and related to queer leather culture.

Hearings on requests from supervisors to landmark two LGBTQ historic sites in San Francisco are expected to take place in the coming weeks. If approved for listing, they would bring the number of properties in the city granted local landmark status specifically for their ties to LGBTQ history to six. At its February 17 meeting the city s Historic Preservation Commission is scheduled to vote on landmarking the home where the late lesbian pioneering couple Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin lived throughout most of their 54 years together. Gay District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman authored the resolution unanimously supported by the Board of Supervisors to begin the landmark process for the property at 651 Duncan Street.

District 6 San Francisco Supervisor Matt Haney introduced a resolution at Tuesday s Board of Supervisors meeting to grant landmark status to the Eagle, the South of Market gay-owned leather bar. Today, I am also introducing a resolution to initiate landmark designation for the San Francisco Eagle Bar, a historic LGBTQ nightlife institution and legacy business located in District 6 within San Francisco s Leather & LGBTQ Cultural District in SOMA, as provided for under Planning Code Section 1004.1, Haney, a straight ally, told the Bay Area Reporter. The resolution is expected to first go to the supervisors land use committee early in 2021. The Board of Supervisors would then take a vote on it. After that, the proposal goes to the historic preservation commission, which has 90 days to weigh in on the proposal. It then returns to the supervisors for a final vote officially designating the property as a city landmark.
