only between 20 and 30% say they favor removing them. the republican party of virginia attacking the democratic nominee there over his position in favor of removing the statues. so i think this is a political issue where there s a divide between elite opinion on it, strongly in favor of removing the statues, again, even in some conservative media outlets, making exactly these arguments about the context and history of the statues versus public opinion, where there s it seemed the preponderance of the opinion on the side of leaving the statues in place. that said, i think this is an issue that most people just haven t thought very deeply about, is not a top issue for voting for most people on either side of the issue. and the fact that donald trump is out there so vocally in favor of keeping these statues and so, so unpopular, donald trump has reverse midas touch on public opinion. making it an issue. if trump is on one side, that s going to push a lot of people who haven t though
