This week s sketch is of a water powered mill located at the mouth of Ganderhook Creek on Rt. 104. This building stood here on the Ohio and Erie canal about five miles south of Jasper until 1907 when it was dismantled.
In 1864, Robert S. Wynn contracted with Albert Flowers and son, Nathaniel, to erect this mill at canal lock 47, known as 28 mile lock because it was 18 miles north of Portsmouth on the canal. The Flowers family were master millwrights and had built mills in West Virginia and one on Brush Creek in Ohio.
This was a sturdy three story frame with large stone that weighed about one ton, which was quarried nearby, in the 12 foot high foundation. This mill was of the type which had the wheel located under the building.

This hidden gem can be found on the northern tip of Anna Maria Island with views of both Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It’s an ideal place for a quiet day at the beach but keep in mind there are no public bathrooms, parking lots or lifeguards on duty at Bean Point. Fortunately, it’s within walking distance of the historic Rod and Reel Pier (875 N. Shore Drive), a great spot for a cold beverage, a fresh grouper sandwich or, yes, a clean restroom.

Becoming the Fire Chief
When Manuel was a young man serving in the military, he assumed he eventually was going to pursue a job at the Ford plant in Monroe just like his father did. He never considered being a fireman because, frankly, he didn’t think it was possible for an African American man to pursue such a career. But at the urging of his friend, Bev Heck, he applied and eventually became a firefighter.
Twenty-two years later, he was promoted to chief, the first-ever African American to be a department head for the City of Monroe.
