After just 10 years, Smithfield must replace $750K firetruck
Though almost 20 years old, Smithfield’s new tower truck purchased for $120,000 is in better shape than the town’s 2010 100-foot ladder truck purchased 10 years ago.
SMITHFIELD – Ten years after the town purchased a 100-foot ladder apparatus for the Fire Department for $750,000, the vehicle was found to be unsafe for use and needs replacement, says Fire Chief Robert Seltzer.
Seltzer said the situation, where the frame rails on the 2010 Pierce Arrow 105-foot Aerial are significantly corroded, left the truck unsafe for personnel.
He explained that the ladder device is supported on the truck by four outriggers, two on each side of the truck, that lock into position and support elevation and swing of the ladder, and prevents the truck from tipping over.
