Dec. 23 Essential workers at risk of exposure to the coronavirus at their job such as teachers, child care workers, grocery store clerks, farmworkers, first responders and those 75 and older should be next in line to be vaccinated, according to a proposal put forth Wednesday by a key California panel.
Vaccination of those workers and seniors could start as soon as mid-to-late January, according to the proposal by a workgroup to the state s community vaccine advisory committee.
The proposal is similar to one made Sunday by a federal advisory panel, which endorsed vaccinating frontline essential workers as well as seniors 75 and older after healthcare workers are protected.

A pair of advisory committees are making potentially life-and-death decisions starting Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2020, over who’s next in line for scarce coronavirus vaccines that aren’t expected to be universally available to California’s nearly 40 million residents until sometime deep into next year. Should teachers be among the chosen few? Farmworkers? Grocery workers? Ride-hailing drivers? Each has its constituency lobbying to be included among about 8 million California residents who will be selected for the second round of vaccines early next year. Teachers, first responders, and grocery and restaurant workers were among those recommended Wednesday to get the next round of scarce vaccines in California, as were florists and sawmill operators who fall into the same broad category of those deemed essential workers.
“We’ve got to figure who we’re going to prioritize,” said Dr. Oliver Brooks, co-chairman of a 16-member panel of medical experts recommending who makes the potential life-and-death cut after the first round of about 3 million vaccines began going this week to health care workers and those in long-term care facilities.
