Country singer Orville Peck released his
Show Pony EP in August, showcasing his innate sense of story as well as his desire to challenge the traditional country narrative and to push for an industry that s both inclusive and boundary-breaking. Picking your favourite anything is a tough go sometimes. Some folks don t like to commit, while others are offended when their favourite is not also
your favourite. Sometimes your favourites are so far apart, that you don t know how to be in the same room with your best friend anymore. (Or maybe you re better with conflict, who knows.)
Thankfully, while 2020 was a terrible year for most things, it was an excellent year for music, which made picking the 100 best Canadian songs of the year a little easier. Taking radio play, streaming and cultural impact into account, these 100 songs from 2020 have either turned heads, drummed up a lot of buzz or will be important to Canada s musical landscape for decades to come or all things at once.

It s no secret that this year challenged the music industry in many ways. The COVID-19 pandemic forced musicians to hit pause on world tours; ongoing discussions around racism and underrepresentation made record labels and award shows rethink their use of language and categorization (to varying levels of success); and social media apps like TikTok continued to break down and rebuild the ways in which the industry operates.
