Racial equity and diversity are a focus of modern politics. Yet, too often, the second that prioritizing racial representation undermines a political agenda, it becomes irrelevant.
The Santa Barbara County Redistricting Commission is guilty of such behavior. As the commission deliberates the best way to fill the recent vacancy created by the resignation of James Hudley, commissioners such as Jannet Rios, who originally prioritized racial representation in commissioner selection, have suddenly flipped to prioritizing political affiliation over representation of the diverse racial makeup of Santa Barbara County.
The independent commission is considering forgoing willing and qualified applicants in District 3 like Lupe Alvarez, who would bring another Latino voice to the redistricting process, in pursuit of a member affiliated with the Democratic Party.

Incident at an apartment serves as a reminder about how to safely extinguish grease fires

A pair of blazes damaged kitchens in Santa Barbara and Goleta on Saturday, with one incident providing a reminder about how to handle a grease fire.
At 6:50 p.m., personnel from the Santa Barbara City Fire Department responded to an incident in an apartment at a six-unit complex in the 1400 block of Euclid Avenue in Santa Barbara.

State Street was shut down in the area for a time because firefighters had to lay a hose line across the roadway.
No injuries were reported, and damaged was estimated at about $50,000.

Crews remained on scene for an extended period to make sure the fire was completely out.
Cause of the fire remained under investigation.

The residents were allowed to return to their units, Mercado said, but the power remained turned off pending an inspection by an electrician.
