U S Tariffs on Additional E U Spirits Another Blow to the Hospitality Industry, Trade Group Says

Resize icon The U.S. government’s decision to impose additional tariffs on certain E.U. distilled spirits will deal a further blow to the hospitality industry already hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, a trade organization warns. On Wednesday, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced a 25% tariff on certain non-sparkling wine, cognac, and other grape brandies from France and Germany. The tariffs will apply on Jan. 12, 2021. The USTR had already imposed 25% tariffs on most wines imported from France, Germany, Spain, and the U.K. starting October 2019, in retaliation for a long-running aircraft subsidy dispute between the U.S. and the EU involving Boeing, headquartered in Chicago, and Airbus, headquartered in Leiden, in the Netherlands.
