Mapplethorpe Jewelry Inspires a New Collection
The designer Gaia Repossi said she set out to revive “the young Robert,” better known for his photographic work, in an eight-piece offering.

One of the lesser-known facts about Robert Mapplethorpe is that, before gaining fame as a photographer, he experimented with jewelry.
About a decade ago the jewelry designer Gaia Repossi learned about that connection after she bought a Mapplethorpe photograph of a palm tree, titled “Puerto Rico, 1981,” at a small show curated by the director Sofia Coppola at the Thaddaeus Ropac gallery in Paris.

Best known for his black-and-white photographs of celebrities, sculptural nudes, BDSM scenes and flowers, Mapplethorpe is being introduced to Korean audiences belatedly through a retrospective at the Kukje Gallery in Seoul and Busan.
