Kim Kardashian Denies Buying Ancient Roman Statue That Officials Believe Was Smuggled Out of Italy

Kim Kardashian embroiled in case related to smuggled ancient Roman statue

Hello, Kim Kardashian? Italy called: It wants its statue back. That pretty much sums up a recent civil forfeiture action filed by the United States government alleging that an antique Roman statue imported to Los Angeles by the reality TV star was smuggled into the country illegally. Court documents filed last month claim that the five-ton shipment valued at nearly $750,000 and addressed to “Kim Kardashian dba Noel Roberts Trust” in Woodland Hills was seized by Customs and Border Protection in 2016 under suspicion that its entry to the US violated the Cultural Property Implementation Act. The Cultural Property Implementation Act, or CPIA, stipulates that archaeological material originating in Italy and representing the pre-classical, Classical and Imperial Roman Periods cannot be imported to the US without proper documentation.

Kim Kardashian is denying having any knowledge of a foreign artifact that was purchased and imported into the States under her name. The makeup and fashion mogul was named in a federal court complaint regarding a Roman statue federal authorities allege was smuggled from Italy and must be forfeited but a rep for Kardashian maintains she had no idea the purchase was even made, according to TMZ. The outlet reported on Thursday, citing a source close to the reality star, that Kardashian, 40, only recently learned of the large purchase, which was allegedly bought by her estranged husband Kanye West, 43, and was part of a larger purchase of expensive art.

The U.S. government is seeking the forfeiture of an ancient Roman sculpture that celebrity influencer Kim Kardashian was in the process of acquiring after officials determined that it had been illegally smuggled out of Italy. The statue was detained at the U.S. border in 2016 after a logistics company working for Kardashian tried to import it with the wrong documentation. New legal documents, first pointed out on Twitter by federal courts reporter Robert Snell and independently verified by Artnet News, have concluded that the work was “looted, smuggled, and illegally exported,” and Italian authorities have requested its repatriation.
