Im also very glad to see jim phillips here. Ive worked on terrorism issues with jim for it must be a quarter century now, and there are very few people that write with the intelligence and prudence that jim phillips does. Heres a couple reasons why i wanted to write this book, with the way terrorism encounters the citizen. I remember back in 1980 reading some clippings many newspapers, it was in newspapers, it was in the chicago area. And a woman was looking out her window near her home, and she saw a van pull up. And in that van there proved to be some nine different people. And they looked rather like an athletics team, you know . The jogging uniforms and the bags. But as she looked out her window, this lady, mrs. Walter jacobson, decides that she should be a little nervous about this. Thered been some robberies in the area
Cherry is some preserve product and its really not. Its note different than the pickled cherry and the brine process is no different than the types of sulfate to use in making wine so really i wouldnt call it a healthy product but i would call it something that is a tasty treat. What you see here are cherries in various stages of the process. The cherries that come and even though we put them in water they still have brine in the fruit so they will go through an extensive washing to get the brine the sulfur in the calcium salts out of the fruit. The book is about the migration experiences of three people, who become representative of the larger whole, which was, essentially the defection of 60 million africanamericans from the south to the north, to the midwest and the west, from 1915, world war i, until 1970, when the south began truly to change. I went to a movie last weekend and they handed me this as im going into the movie. Wont tell you what it was but i want to read it to you. Every day more migrants are coming into the cities to seek a better life for their children. The scale of this massive migration from the poor countryside to the burgeoning cities is unprecedented in human history. The migrants provide a constant and cheap source of labor for excountries booming cities and the thriving economy is built on the backs of those citizens. Do you have any idea what country that is . The park so its been with me all this time. But i think when it comes to the actual writing of the book it probably started very likely after i had gotten out and then a reporter for the New York Times and started to talk to people in other parts of the country. I was the Chicago Bureau chief for the New York Times and i would be in chicago and cleveland and detroit in that began to hear there were similar experiences people head. Nobody talked about it as a migration experience. There was just talk about it as well i cant talk about it. This weekend we will have to go back to mississippi where theres a Family Reunion or a funeral i have to go to. We began to connect the dots and realize it was so much bigger than my connection to their experience in chicago with an national outpouring of people. That we do live in the world the year 2013 that no airport has been named after someone who can say that they are openly gay, that they are open member of the gay lesbian community. No city in the world is done that. To the extent that San Francisco can be proud of so many things, one of the things that i am very proud of when i think of San Francisco is the fact that we have always been at the forefront of civil rights and at the forefront of lgbt rights. And there is a place in this world where i hope the city would be open to recognizing the contributions of an openly ldbt person. I would hope that that place would be San Francisco. One of the things that struck me about this conversation is something that we learn about harvey milk. When he was first elected, he understood the significance of his election.
