PRATTVILLE Prattville Junior High School recognized its history Friday morning, and looked ahead to the future with a time capsule.
The shiny cylinder, to be opened in 2040, was buried in a flower bed by the school s main entrance. It s all part of the 50 year celebration of the school. Our 50th year was actually last year, but we couldn t have the celebration because of COVID, said Principal Janice Stockman. We wanted to recognize the 50 years. but we also wanted to honor our history, a history that not many people know about.
The campus was home of North Highland High School, the school for Black students during days of segregation. The main building was built in 1960. When Prattville schools were integrated in 1970, the school became the junior high.

The National Association of Music Merchants designated Newark Central School District as one of the Best Communities for Music Education in the U.S. for the ninth year in a row.
Now in its 22nd year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation goes to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.
To qualify, NCSD answered questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities and support for the music programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
