Ya ke Smith: UT professor recommends 5 films from Black directors

We recently asked an Austin expert for recommended movies to watch this Black History Month. Ya ke Smith is an associate professor of film at the University of Texas, as well as the Moody College of Communication s first associate dean of diversity, equity and inclusion. He s also a celebrated filmmaker in his own right: Smith s debut feature, Wolf, premiered at South by Southwest in 2012, and shorts like Katrina s Son, Brother and  dawn. have found audiences across the country. WarnerMedia premiered Wonder Woman 1984 on Friday, Dec. 25, simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max to rousing yet polarizing comments from viewers. While it was one of the most talked-about releases this year, two other films released during the holiday season are equally deserving of that attention–Disney and Pixar’s Souland Amazon Studios’ Sylvie s Love. They are far different from the superhero film, but they are both full of lessons about how we should live our lives, especially after enduring 2020.
