The Sejm also elected on Thursday the ruling Law and Justice Party candidate, Deputy Foreign Minister Piotr Wawrzyk, as the new Commissioner for Human Rights – a vote which has yet to be approved by the Senate, the parliament’s upper house.
Of the 453 MPs who voted, 233 backed Wawrizyk, while 219 opposed his candidacy, and one MP abstained.
This was the third attempt to elect a new Commissioner for Human Rights.
However, this time, the Sejm had the choice between three candidates, including Law and Justice candidate Wawrzyk, Polish People’s Party and Confederation’s candidate Robert Gwiazdowski, and Zuzanna Rudzińska-Bluszcz, proposed by the clubs of the Civic Coalition and the Left Party with the support of Szymon Hołownia’s Polska 2050 movement.
