Migrant Children To Be Housed Temporarily At Long Beach Convention Center Syndicated Local – CBS Los Angeles
LONG BEACH (CBSLA) The Long Beach City Council Tuesday unanimously voted to allow the federal government to temporarily house unaccompanied migrant children at the convention center.
The shelter will provide housing, food, schooling and medical and mental healthcare for up to 1,000 migrant children at a time for up to three months. The children will only be housed at the convention center until they can be united with already identified family members or sponsors.
“The key component of this, which we all understand, is that this is temporary,” Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, who backed the plan, said. “There is a firm Aug. 2 date that the contract will end, and that it’s important for us that this is focused on family reunification.”

The city on Monday said in a statement said the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has indicated it would like to move ahead with the plan for Long Beach, as convention centers in Dallas and San Diego have already been converted to emergency shelters.
The Long Beach City Council will review the proposal in a closed-session meeting at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The discussion can happen behind closed doors because state open meeting rules allow for real estate negotiations to be discussed privately.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is expected to lease the property from the city, but the terms have yet to be set.
