reporter: some 11,000 guests packed the south lawn of the white house this morning to get a gyms of pope francis. he then met behind closed doors with president obama. in a ceremony fit for a pope, president obama joined by the first lady and members of his cabinet officially welcomed pope francis to the white house. in your humility, your embrace of simplicity and the gentleness of your words and the generosity of your spirit, we see a living example of jesus s teachings. reporter: while the president largely used his speech about compassion, he did touch on issues where the two leaders agree. we re grateful. reporter: for his part, pope francis s public remarks were limited to areas of agreement as follow. the public speeches were followed by a closed-door oval office meeting. it seems clear to me also that climate change is a problem we can no locker be left we can no longer leave that to our future generation. l at the white house, fox news. tara moriarty

speaking in spanish he canonized father junipero serra the founder of the california mission system. father junipero serra he was the embodiment of a church which goes forth, a church that sets out to bring everywhere the reconciling, tenderness of god. the pope s decision to declare father junipero serra a saint is seen by some as a needed acknowledgment. tens of thousands people gathered for the canonization mass that basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception. that is the largest catholic church in the nation. among those who attended were from the bay area. ktvu s tara moriarty was inside the basilica for the mass. can you explain what it was like? reporter: well, when the pope arrived he did a lap in his pope mobile and he was all smiles waving to the crowd. everybody who was in the crowd lit up. they were so excited to see him. a day here at the basilica that people will never forget. he struggled with the decision to canonize father junipero serra. for his cousin it was something that he prayed for and worked hard for for 37 years. to become a saint you need to perform two miracles. he only had one. her sisters at the church prayed to father junipero serra and in two weeks she was healed. she taught children and was just a simple soul. never wanted to be in the lime light. i know her spirit is here today. reporter: she was flown to rome where she was poke for days till they found no trace of the disease. many people bought rosaries and the pope blessed them. so they be taken the memory of today and a piece of pope francis that they will have forever and i am one of those people. i bought these, i don t know if we can show these, these are the bracelets i bought today and these are the rosary beads they have for sale here and they were made in italy. what is unique about this one, it has a picture of pope francis on it. it is a great momento. so mom an
