A Broward Democratic Party has people buying books about Black and LGBTQ subjects for donation to tiny neighborhood libraries in an effort to provide students with books and information that’s being removed from public schools. It’s an effort to get books in the hands of students in the face of heightened challenges on what they can access in their schools and to counter Gov. Ron DeSantis and groups such as Moms for Liberty.

She was a generous person from humble beginnings who worked her way into the political world of Broward County. In 1985, she made history as the first Black person to serve on the county commission. Friends say she served her community with a full heart, never turning away anyone in need.
South Florida artist and activist Daniel Pontet has died at 64. Pontet, who is survived by his two teanage daughters Sophia and Francesca, will be commemorated with an art exhibit and celebration of life on April 20 at Hollywood ArtsPark Gallery.
