The process of hiring a new North Wilkesboro police chief due to Chief Joe Rankinâs upcoming retirement should start in late February, said North Wilkesboro Town Manager Wilson Hooper during a town board work session Thursday night.
Hooper announced last week that Rankin plans to retire Jan. 4 and that Rob Thornburg will be sworn in as interim police chief Jan. 5.
Hooper said that Rankinâs permanent successor will be sought through an open recruitment process that will start with advertising in various industry websites in late February. He said the process will include consideration of current police department employees.
