The Conservatives returned 47 councillors, enough to form a majority administration at Cornwall Council, the first time one political group has had overall control of the council since its formation in 2009. Conservative Group Leader Cllr Linda Taylor said: “We’ve done it! The Conservatives in Cornwall will now control Cornwall Council for the first time.”
Former MP Andrew George has been elected to Cornwall Council Former Helston and St Ives MP Andrew George has said he is deeply grateful to have been granted a majority in the Cornwall Council election. Mr George, who lost his seat to Derek Thomas in the 2015 election after eight years in office, said it will be an honour to now represent the people of Heamoor, Ludgvan, Madron, Gulval, Zennor, Morvah, Newmill and surrounding hamlets and moors. The Liberal Democrat thanked the previous incumbent of the new ward, Conservative Simon Elliott, saying he was gracious and kind in defeat. Mr George got 1,483 votes while Mr Elliot achieved 873.
Speaking on Friday evening Cllr Taylor also said: “We will start to deliver on our plan. Tomorrow is the start of a new, big adventure for Cornwall. “We will be working with our six Cornish MPs to make sure we deliver exactly what the people of Cornwall want. I am looking forward to the challenge and working with other candidates who have been selected.” She added: “We will make Cornwall a much better place to live and work.” County Hall has been controlled by a Lib Dem/Independent coalition for the last four years but in recent general elections the Lib Dems had seen support decline while the Conservatives and Labour bolstered their votes.
