Jack Boyle and Leo Carter led the way as the Canterbury Kings secured their first win under lights at Hagley Oval in the Twenty20 Super Smash on Monday, beating the Auckland Aces by six runs in a nail-biting finish. Boyle made 44 off 34 balls and Carter smashed 42 off 28 to help the hosts post 154-6 from their 20 overs in Christchurch. Matt Henry and Ed Nuttall then struck early with the ball, removing Black Caps batsmen Martin Guptill and Glenn Phillips and putting the Aces under plenty of pressure.

Finn Allen got the Wellington Firebirds off to a fast start and Troy Johnson guided them home as they began their Twenty20 Super Smash title defence in style with a win over the Auckland Aces on Thursday. Allen blasted 53 off 24 balls at the top of the order while Johnson was not out on 50 off 43 balls as they chased down their target of 177 with five balls to spare and four wickets in hand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. They entered the final five overs of their innings needing 46 off 30 balls – an asking rate of more than nine runs per over – but quickly got things under control, as Jamie Gibson blasted a pair of straight sixes off the bowling of Rob O’Donnell.
