MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) One of New York City s former top cops has new marching orders: to bring businesses back to a COVID-stricken city.
These days it can be depressing to see what NYC has become after nearly a year of the pandemic, with wide swaths of Manhattan all but deserted. However, Terry Monahan sees hope. Everything will start to reopen, you will see New York come back, Monahan said.
Once the highest-ranking cop in the NYPD, Monahan famously took a knee to help diffuse tension between police and protesters last summer.
But now he s out of uniform and into City Hall. His new role is every bit as crucial.

But some restaurateurs say the mayor has already lost the opportunity to help them.
“The industry is past the point of redemption. We’ve been closed for 240 days for indoor dining,” said Jeffrey Bank, chief executive of the Alicart Restaurant Group. “The only reason restaurants are not all out of business is because there’s an eviction moratorium.”
Bank said that instead of offering small-scale solutions for ailing restaurants, the mayor should be working in tandem with Gov. Andrew Cuomo to lobby Washington to pass the $125 billion Restaurants Act recovery bill.
“There’s a $1.9 trillion package sitting out there. The mayor and the governor should be begging the government to pass the Restaurant Act in it,” Bank said. “Why are they not proclaiming to [Sen. Chuck] Schumer the need to help our industry?”
The police presence at Trump Tower on 5th Avenue will be scaled down once President Donald Trump leaves office Wednesday, according to a New York Police Department official. Blocked streets, heavy traffic, heavy police presence, big deterrents to shoppers, and big deterrents to commerce, East Midtown Partnership President Rob Byrnes said.
Now that Trump is no longer president, the security bubble will begin to deflate, but East 56th Street will remain shutdown as law enforcement assess potential threats.
Business owners, struggling amid the coronavirus pandemic, hope the security eases quickly so they can try to capture more customers. Anything we can do to bring more people in and make people more comfortable while they re shopping is extremely important, Byrnes said.
