Body of missing USM student last seen at Dauphin Island beach found

View Comments The body of a missing University of Southern Mississippi honors student who was last seen Sunday swimming on a sandbar at a Dauphin Island beach was found Wednesday. Jeff Collier, Dauphin Island mayor, said police and fire officials found the body of 20-year-old Rob Brent, of Yazoo County, six miles west of the West End Beach parking lot. The family has been notified, Collier said in a Facebook post.  Thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. There is a big, unfillable hole in the Honors College now, said Ellen Weinauer, dean of the Honors College. Each member of the Honors College family is mourning this inexpressible loss. As we mourn, we are also keeping his friends and his family in our hearts.

Brent was last seen while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico at Alabama’s Dauphin Island on Sunday. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” said Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Sirena Cantrell. Student Counseling Services (SCS) is available to support members of the Southern Miss community, with group counseling on the following dates/times at the counseling center located in Bond Hall: Thursday, May 6, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Search continues for missing swimmer on Dauphin Island

DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (AP) Authorities continue to search for a Mississippi student who went missing Sunday while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico at Alabama’s Dauphin Island. The U.S. Coast Guard tells local news outlets that Rob Brent is a student at the University of Southern Mississippi. The Coast Guard says Brent was reported missing around 6 p.m. Sunday after last being seen near a sandbar on the island’s west end. Coast Guard boats and aviation units were looking for Brent Monday, as was the Mobile County sheriff’s flotilla, Dauphin Island emergency responders and the Alabama Marine Patrol. All-terrain vehicles are combing shorelines.
