The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will get an update from Montgomery Executive Airport officials about plans to lengthen the runway. The airport plans to increase the length by 20 percent, which will allow it to accommodate nearly three-quarters of all business jets. As we’ve reported, the airport got a $1.3 million federal grant last year for the project.
Part of Parkland Drive in Lynchburg will close daily through Thursday. Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Thursday from Boonsboro Road to Morrison Drive, repairing the pavement. A detour will be in place.
You probably missed a couple of remarkable events Wednesday before sunrise in Roanoke. One was, Gary Duerk turned 75 â more about his atypical birthday plans below.
The second occurred just off Salem Avenue between First and Second streets downtown about 6 a.m. Shortly after Duerk and his wife, Barbara, arrived on their bicycles at Roanokeâs Amtrak platform, they dismounted and pushed them onto a passenger train.
That was a milestone â those were the first wheeled-on bikes ever in a Northeast Regional passenger car in Virginia. They wonât be the last. Beginning next month, itâll occur throughout the commonwealth.

Road closures in Nelson County could impact your commute starting today. Norfolk Southern will be replacing crossings along five roads. Closings at each will last up to two days. Detours will be in place. Work will start on River Road near Shipman and continue north.
More students in Montgomery County will return to the classroom. Last month, the school board voted to bring students back to class four days a week with one day online. The school board was split four to three on the decision.
Southeast Roanoke could see a new four-story apartment building rise near Norfolk Southernâs East End Shops.
The Roanoke Planning Commission recommended approval of a rezoning request that would allow developer Lucas Thornton and his partners to construct the Lawson Building West in the 600 block of Campbell Avenue Southeast. The site sits just yards away from the original Lawson Building, a 1930s-era warehouse that Thorntonâs company turned into a residential complex in 2009.

The request will go before the Roanoke City Council, possibly as soon as its Dec. 21 public hearing. If approved, work is expected to begin within the first three months of 2021, Thornton said.

Shentel crews will begin installing fiber optic lines throughout the city of Lynchburg today. Work will take place on both main roads and in neighborhoods. Most of the work will take place during the day, but some nighttime work may be required. Work will continue for at least the next year.
Senator Tim Kaine will hold a virtual discussion with frontline health care workers today. He will hear about their experiences, dealing with the stress and burnout during the pandemic. Kaine will also talk about his effort to pass the Health Care Provider Protection Act, which aims to reduce and prevent suicide among health care professionals.
