ELIZABETHTON â The economics of a pandemic dominated discussions in Monday nightâs meeting of the Carter County Commissionâs Budget Committee.
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was a factor in several different budget discussions during the meeting, from preparing for the unknown costs involved in setting up a vaccination point in the county to discussions about sick leave for county employees who are quarantined or required to stay at home to care for a sick family member.
Although the negotiations have not yet been accomplished, it appears the county may be setting up a vaccination point on the Matheson Property on U.S. Highway 19E on the east side of Elizabethton. The vacant industrial property was formerly the site of an Alcoa aluminum extrusion facility.

That 14-year streak ranks as the longest anyone has served as mayor under the current city charter, which dates to 1965. The record on the older city governments does not indicate whether any other mayor served longer than Alexander.
Alexander is proud of the cityâs accomplishments under his long tenure, but says it was an achievement of the entire city council. âThe city has seen a lot of improvements, such as in the school system, which is one of the best in the state. Those improvements were made possible because of the city council working together, not just because of one man,â he said.
