It’s the standout terrestrial channel offering on a Christmas Day which, bar a couple of nice new animations, Angela’s Christmas Wish (RTE1, 5.15pm) and Quentin Blake’s The Clown (Channel 4, 7.40pm), is more or less a repeat of last year’s.
All the usual suspects are here: Strictly Come Dancing (BBC1, 4.45pm); Britain’s Got Talent Christmas Spectacular (UTV 8pm); Call the Midwife (BBC1, 7.40pm), and Mrs Brown’s Boys (RTE1, 9.45pm; BBC1, 10pm), in which Mammy enters a Radio Times competition (which, incidentally, you can’t if you live in the Republic of Ireland) to perform an alternative Queen’s speech.

To kick off the celebrations, another Worzel Gummidge will be airing with actor Mackenzie Crook returning as the iconic scarecrow.
In this special, Worzel comes across an old friend, the carved ship s figurehead Saucy Nancy who wants to return to the sea.

Dahl fell in love with Potter s work, which saw a generation of children become fascinated with her colourful collection of characters including Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck. Such was his obsession with her books, a young Dahl convinced his mother to take him to visit Potter’s home, where her stories were written. But according to someone close to the Dahl family, the soon-to-be literary giant was left red-faced after his hero told him to buzz off after he caught a glimpse of the fabled author.
