Australia's longest road tunnel proposed for Great Western Highway upgrade

Deputy Premier Investigations are now underway to make an 11-kilometre tunnel the central component of an upgraded Great Western Highway between Katoomba and Lithgow, forming the longest road tunnel in Australia. Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the proposed tunnel would transform the state by better connecting the Central West to the East Coast. “We have already committed to tunnels at Blackheath and Mount Victoria – this proposal would see those tunnels joined together, creating the longest road tunnel in the country,” Mr Barilaro said. “This is an immensely complex and ambitious plan, but we’re working hard to make it happen because we know what a difference it will make to the lives of commuters, to regional businesses who need access to Sydney and vice versa, to freight companies, to families visiting relatives and to holiday makers.

Planning approval fast-tracked for new M12 motorway in Sydney

Date Time Planning approval fast-tracked for new M12 motorway in Sydney The M12 has been given the green light after receiving fast-tracked planning approval under the New South Wales Government’s COVID-19 economic recovery program. The approval of the motorway as part of the Priority Assessment Program is a major step towards delivering direct access to the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport. Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said this approval means both governments can get on with delivering this jobs-generating project. “The M12 Motorway, which is majority funded by the Morrison Government, will support more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs during its delivery,” Minister Fletcher said.

Keeping our waterways safe post floods

Deputy Premier, Minister for Transport and Roads The NSW Government is in the process of repositioning each of the 389 navigation markers which washed out of location during the recent floods, as part of a commitment to maintain the safest conditions on NSW waterways. Deputy Premier and Minister responsible for disaster recovery John Barilaro said the NSW Government has completed a full assessment of damage to the State’s waterways and will be working to get markers back in place as quickly as possible. “Almost 400 navigation aids, such as buoys and channel markers were washed away by flood waters, with the Mid North Coast being the worst affected. In one case a buoy ended up 206 kilometres from its starting point in the Manning River,” Mr Barilaro said.
